Making Teaneck a Regional Destination Without Losing Its Character

Teaneck First Campaign

Teaneck occupies a special position. We are close to New York City and connected to communities throughout Bergen County, yet Teaneck has maintained its own identity as a diverse, residential town with established neighborhoods, local businesses and a strong tradition of civic life.

Teaneck First believes we can attract visitors, support local commerce and raise the town's regional profile without sacrificing the character residents value.

Becoming a destination does not have to mean pursuing large-scale development or trying to imitate another municipality. It can mean becoming known for experiences that are distinctly Teaneck: multicultural events, outstanding restaurants, live performances, public art, history programs, neighborhood markets, youth showcases and welcoming commercial districts.

These activities could bring visitors into Teaneck while directing economic activity toward existing businesses and community organizations.

Success, however, must be measured carefully. An event that attracts people but creates unmanaged traffic, sanitation problems or unreasonable disruption is not successful for the residents who live nearby. Growth must be planned with infrastructure, public safety, accessibility, parking and neighborhood quality of life in mind.

That balanced approach reflects the experience of the Teaneck First team.

Deputy Mayor Denise Belcher understands Township operations and the responsibilities involved in moving public initiatives forward. George Fernandez Jr. brings the perspective of a union leader and longtime Teaneck small-business owner. Duane Harley, Esq., contributes legal experience and approximately a decade of service advising Teaneck's Planning Board and Youth Advisory Board.

A regional cultural strategy should begin by asking residents and businesses what they want Teaneck to be known for. It should identify existing community assets before creating new programs. It should establish partnerships, set realistic goals and evaluate whether initiatives actually benefit local businesses and residents.

Teaneck's location gives us an advantage, but our people give us our identity.

We do not have to choose between economic vitality and community character. With thoughtful planning, strong resident participation and leadership that understands the town, Teaneck can welcome others while remaining unmistakably Teaneck.

Teaneck First believes progress should strengthen what residents love about this community - not erase it.
