Residents should not have to organize a major campaign simply to be heard by their local government.
They should not learn about consequential proposals only after the most important decisions have been shaped. Public participation should not feel like a formality conducted at the end of a process.
Teaneck First believes residents deserve a more meaningful role in how our town is governed.
That begins with clear and timely communication. Important information should be presented in language residents can understand. Meeting notices, proposals and supporting documents should be easy to find. People should have enough time to review what is being considered and understand how it might affect their homes, neighborhoods, businesses and quality of life.
Listening must also happen before decisions are finalized. Depending on the issue, that could include neighborhood meetings, community surveys, working groups, public forums or direct conversations with the residents and businesses most affected.
Teaneck is filled with knowledgeable people. Our residents include educators, planners, attorneys, business owners, healthcare professionals, engineers, social-service providers, artists, advocates and longtime community volunteers. Local government should recognize that experience as an asset.
The Teaneck First candidates have built their leadership through community involvement. Deputy Mayor Denise Belcher has worked directly with residents through municipal service, business leadership and community advocacy. George Fernandez Jr.'s experience in labor and social work is grounded in listening, understanding concerns and advocating for fair outcomes. Duane Harley, Esq. has spent a decade advising Teaneck's Planning Board and Youth Advisory Board, where participation and thoughtful review are essential.
Listening does not mean promising that every person will receive the outcome they want. It means creating a fair process, explaining how decisions are reached and remaining accountable for the results.
It also means making room for people who have historically felt overlooked. Young residents, seniors, renters, homeowners, business owners and residents from every cultural community should know their voices matter throughout the year - not only during election season.
Teaneck First believes the Council belongs to the people of Teaneck. Your experience matters. Your concerns matter. Your ideas matter.
