From Cultural Celebration to Economic Opportunity

Teaneck First Campaign

Cultural celebrations bring people together. With thoughtful planning, they can also create opportunities for artists, vendors, restaurants, performers, entrepreneurs and local organizations.

Teaneck First believes we should explore how community celebrations can generate lasting value for the residents and businesses that make them possible.

When an event draws people to a commercial district, the economic benefits should extend beyond the event organizer. Local restaurants can offer specials. Teaneck vendors can sell their products. Musicians and artists can be compensated for their work. Young entrepreneurs can introduce their businesses. Visitors can discover shops and services they may return to later.

This requires planning with economic participation in mind.

Local businesses and cultural organizations should be involved early. Vendor opportunities should be communicated clearly and broadly. Events should be accessible to businesses of different sizes, including home-based entrepreneurs and residents testing a new idea.

Teaneck could also consider a searchable directory of local artists, performers, vendors, cultural organizations and businesses interested in participating in Township and community events. That would make it easier for organizers to find Teaneck talent and keep more event-related spending within the community.

George Fernandez Jr.'s experience is especially relevant. As a union vice president, he understands the value of fair opportunity and respect for people's work. As the owner of a Teaneck small business for more than a decade, he understands the difference between an idea that sounds good and an initiative that produces practical value for business owners.

Deputy Mayor Denise Belcher brings experience connecting municipal priorities with community and economic development. Duane Harley, Esq., contributes legal, planning and civic insight from his law practice and decade of advisory service to Teaneck's Planning Board and Youth Advisory Board.

Together, they can help build partnerships that treat culture as both a community asset and a source of economic opportunity.

The purpose is not to commercialize every tradition. Cultural integrity and community leadership must remain central. The goal is to ensure that when Teaneck's cultures attract attention and participation, the people who preserve and share those cultures also have opportunities to benefit.

Our town is filled with creativity, knowledge and entrepreneurial ability. Teaneck First wants to help connect those resources so that cultural celebration produces stronger relationships, more visible local talent and greater economic activity.
