Creating More Places for Young People to Participate and Lead

Teaneck First Campaign

Young people are often described as Teaneck's future. But they are also part of Teaneck's present, with ideas, concerns and talents that can contribute to the community right now.

Teaneck First believes young people should have more opportunities to participate, create and lead.

That begins with listening. What kinds of programs do young residents want? Where do they feel welcome? What would encourage them to become more involved in community life? What skills, interests and perspectives could they share if given the opportunity? The answers should come from young people themselves.

Youth involvement can take many forms: advisory roles, internships, public-service projects, arts programs, entrepreneurship showcases, mentoring, civic education, environmental activities and opportunities to help plan community events.

Teaneck could create more visible pathways connecting young residents with Township boards, local businesses, nonprofit organizations, professionals, artists and community leaders. A student interested in government could learn how municipal decisions are made. A young artist could participate in a public exhibition. An aspiring entrepreneur could present an idea at a youth business showcase. A teenager interested in environmental work could help organize a cleanup or sustainability project.

These experiences build confidence and practical skills. They also teach young people that their town values their participation.

Duane Harley, Esq., brings particularly relevant experience to this effort. He has spent approximately a decade advising Teaneck's Youth Advisory Board while also advising the Planning Board. His service has given him sustained exposure to the concerns and potential of Teaneck's young people.

Deputy Mayor Denise Belcher brings the municipal experience needed to connect youth participation with Township opportunities. George Fernandez Jr., through his work as a union leader, social worker, chaplain and small-business owner, understands the importance of mentorship, advocacy and creating practical pathways for people to succeed.

Together, the Teaneck First candidates can help move youth engagement from occasional recognition to consistent participation.

We should not wait until young people leave Teaneck to ask what might bring them back. We should give them reasons to feel connected now.

Teaneck First believes young people deserve more than a seat in the audience. They deserve a role in shaping what comes next.
